Die Deutsche Uhrenstraße verläuft über 267 km inmitten des Schwarzwalds und der Baar. Diese Landschaft birgt mehr als 300 Jahre Kultur- und Industriegeschichte. Sicher, die Kuckucksuhr ist das Markenzeichen der Region, doch zu den Zeitmessern aus dem Schwarzwald gehören frühe Holzräderuhren und Wecker genauso wie heutige Anlagen zur Arbeitszeiterfassung oder Armbanduhren.

“Sustainable Development Requires Lots of Feedback Loops“ was the topic oft he 3rd afternoon about the future with Professor Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker at Furtwangen University.

As the Honorary President of the Club of Rome, he is one of the world´s leading environmental scientiests. Drawing his expertise from decades of responsible positions, he overlooks our massive challenges and realistic opportunities in their international perspective from the scientific, technological, economic, social, and philosophical dimensions. His sound and frank analysis about the current situation of our common living space, planet earth, and development paths, captured the audience full attention. From this, he derived possible solution spaces, with the required cross-generational and international responsibilities in all dimensions.

In Glasgow at COP 26 (United Nations Climate Change conference 21), the nations of our earth are trying to pave a way to lead our global momentum to a good future for our planet. Professor von Weizsäcker´s expertise and wisdom are certainly a unique resource, helping to achieve this aim. This 3rd afternoon about the future was organized by Prof. Dr. Achim Karduck from Furtwangen University under the sustainability slogan “Campus in Action – from Knowledge to Action“.

In Glasgow at COP 26 (United Nations Climate Change conference 21), the nations of our earth are trying to pave a way to lead our global momentum to a good future for our planet. The challenges are huge, and particularly the young people are in motion and ask for trustworthy change. The scientific knowledge is evident, and the our technological capacity certainly promising.

The dialogue with Professor Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker was conducted after his presentation with the title “Sustainable Development Requires Lots of Feedback Loops“ at Furtwangen University. The conversation considers in depth, what the rational behind sustainable development as a cross-generational and international long term responsibility could lead us, as the United Nations of our planet earth.

The interview was conducted with Professor Achim Karduck, director sustainable development and computer science professor at Furtwangen University, and Cécile Geoffroy from Ecole Nationale Superieur IMT Albi (France), international exchange student in the Master Program Mobile Systems at Furtwangen University.

Interview with Professor Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker

At the latest since Greta Thunberg and Fridays for Future, the climate crisis finally found a place in our everyday life. We have started to reduce plastic, buy regional products, avoid flights and wear second hand clothes. Environmentally friendly ways of life concern more and more children, teens, and adults. But we can not solve it on our own. Especially in politics and economy, we need a rethinking. “A New Enlightenment is needed for the Full World“, demands Prof. Dr. Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker. The former Co-President of The Club of Rome ranks among the most famous environment scientists. In his lecture, he explains the difference between the comparatively Empty World and resource usage in the midst of the 20th century and today´s Full World, and revolutionises the sustainable understanding of his audience.

In this interview with professors and students of Furtwangen University, Professor von Weizsäcker outlines solutions for our economic world, but also about what every single one of us can act and the role of education. Scientists, professors, and students ask questions which concern their everyday life. And Professor von Weizsäcker gives pathbreaking answers.
